18k gold is a robust and strong metal, however, because of its high gold content (75%) it is generally more susceptible to scratches, dings and dents than 14k. Take the following steps to ensure your Relic looks its best even when you're a relic.
-
| Cleaning | Using a soft toothbrush or microfiber cloth, clean your pieces with a warm water and mild dish soap solution to remove body oil, dirt, grime, etc. Very dirty pieces can be soaked in this solution for 15–20 minutes prior to scrubbing. Avoid soaking pieces with emeralds, tanzanite, pearls and opals, as these are porous or chemically sensitive stones. |
|---|---|
| Avoid chemicals | Harsh chemicals and even some nearly ubiquitous chemicals like chlorine can affect 18k gold. Interestingly, not because of the gold usually, but because chemicals sometimes react with the metals that gold is alloyed with, weakening or discoloring it. For this reason, we recommend that you remove your pieces before swimming, cleaning, or working with any chemicals. Lotions, creams and perfumes are generally safe to apply but can leave residue on the gold. Further, it goes without saying that it is also best to avoid wearing any Relics that are likely to be scratched, rubbed, hit or pushed on by other hard objects or metals. This helps to avoid scratches, dents or cracks. |
| Polishing | The use of a gold polishing cloth for occasional buffing is fine. However, avoid overpolishing on pieces that have intricate details, as they may wear down. If needed, a jeweler can help reset a piece's luster with a professional polish. |
| Storage | Your Relics are safely stored in their box that you receive when you collect one. They will also be well protected in a cloth bag, or any other purpose-built jewelry box, container, etc. — Don't overthink it and don't under-wear it.
